Kiva Sakona
Research group TARR
Kiva Sakona is a Basque visual artist and researcher based in Amsterdam. She holds a research master’s degree in Artistic Research from the University of Amsterdam, a bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of the Basque Country and Aarhus University in Denmark, a master’s degree in Art Direction from the Film and Audiovisual School of Catalonia (ESCAC), and a degree in Graphic Design from BAU College of Arts and Design in Barcelona. Beyond her art practice, she has worked as an art director for film productions and as a graphic designer at various design studios in the past. In 2017, she co-founded the graphic design and creative direction studio What The Studio.
Kiva Sakona’s multidisciplinary practice involves writing, video and installation work. She investigates how the aesthetic experiences of everyday life are tied to the ways in which advanced capitalism captures libidinal energy. She is interested in the visual and temporal conditions of the multimedia environments we inhabit and in how these are closely tied not only to the spirit of productivity of our time, but also to our capacity for attention, sensibility and imagination. She creates narratives and experiences of space and time that explore the ways in which we adapt our psychological and affective behaviours to our saturated audio-visual surroundings. While holding space for humour, she speculates on the possibility of disengaging from the present-day attention economy.
